AGARTALA, Nov 21 – A 46-year-old crime reporter of a vernacular media house, Sudip Dutta Bhowmik was today shot dead by a Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawan inside Commandant Tapan Debbarma’s office at RK Nagar in West Tripura district triggering an outcry in the media fraternity. The incident took place exactly 61 days after the brutal murder of TV journalist Santanu Bhowmik at Manwai in West Tripura district.

It has been alleged that Nanda Gopal Reang, personnel bodyguard of the 2nd battalion TSR Commandant, fired at the scribe from point blank range.

Later, the body was shifted to GB Pant Hospital where the post-mortem was carried out in the presence of executive magistrate.

“It was a cold blooded murder at the instruction of Commandant Tapan Debbarma as Sudip had made as many as 11 stories exposing his corrupt practices in Syandan Patrika, a Bengali daily,” alleged Subal Kumar Dey, editor-cum-proprietor of the newspaper.

The veteran journalist alleged the Commandant had tried to conceal the body in order to hush up the entire episode, he said, adding that the journalist bodies want immediate arrest of Tapan Debbarma.

“If our demand is not fulfilled by tonight, then journalists will stage a rally with the body,” he warned.
