IMPHAL, Jan 11 – Manipur Forest and Horticulture Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumaron has underscored the need for encouraging organic farming in the state in order to promote local products.To promote organic products, the first-ever organic outlet was inaugurated in Imphal under the Mission Organic Chain Development scheme in November last.
Speaking to mediapersons on the sideline of an event here, the minister said that the Centre has been extending help to the organic farmers of the State under various schemes. He also called upon the farmers to focus on organic cultivation by using vermicompost instead of chemical fertilisers.
He informed that the department is planning to provide loans to the farmers so that they can produce vermicompost.
Project Officer K Debadutta Sharma of Manipur Organic Mission Agency said that 2,000 hectares of land have been selected for cultivation of black rice which has a good demand in the global market. Moreover, 3,000 hectares of land have been chosen for cultivation of ginger, turmeric, orange, lemon, pineapple and king chilli in six districts.
